Soloist Spotlight: Yekwon Sunwoo at Eurasian Stars 2025
Yekwon Sunwoo, the first Korean pianist to win the Cliburn Gold Medal, is celebrated for his combination of technical virtuosity, expressive depth, and versatile artistry in both solo and chamber performances. With an international career spanning major concert halls, symphonies, and festivals, his artistry continues to garner critical acclaim and global recognition.
Gold medallist of the Fifteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, pianist Yekwon Sunwoo has been praised for his “unfailingly consistent excellence” (International Piano) and described as “a pianist who commands a comprehensive technical arsenal that allows him to thunder without breaking a sweat” (Chicago Tribune). Combining power and virtuosity with a quest for truth and beauty in music, Sunwoo brings both commanding presence and refined artistry to every performance.
As the first Korean pianist to win the Cliburn Gold Medal, Sunwoo has gone on to build an international career of remarkable breadth. He has appeared with the Fort Worth and Tucson Symphonies, the Bucheon Philharmonic, the Washington Chamber Orchestra, the Royal Danish Orchestra, and the Danish Radio Orchestra, among many others. His recital debuts at Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, and Salle Cortot have been met with critical acclaim, while festival appearances have included Vail, Bowdoin International, Toronto Summer Music, and Summit Music Festival.
A passionate chamber musician, Sunwoo has collaborated with artists such as Benjamin Beilman, Gary Hoffman, Andrei Ioniță, Linus Roth, and the Jerusalem and Brentano Quartets, further showcasing the versatility and breadth of his artistry. His touring has also taken him to Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Panama under the auspices of the Kumho Asiana Cultural Foundation.
Sunwoo’s artistry has been recognized with numerous prizes, including First Prizes at the 2015 International German Piano Award, the 2014 Vendome Prize at the Verbier Festival, the 2013 Sendai International Music Competition, and the 2012 William Kapell International Piano Competition. His recordings include Cliburn Gold 2017, released on Decca Gold shortly after his victory, featuring his acclaimed performances of Ravel’s La Valse and Rachmaninov’s Piano Sonata No. 2.
Born in Anyang, South Korea, Sunwoo began piano studies at the age of eight and made his recital and orchestral debuts in Seoul by fifteen. His teachers have included Seymour Lipkin, Robert McDonald, Richard Goode, and Bernd Goetzke, each shaping the artistry that continues to distinguish him on the world stage.
